Wall E = Idiocracy
When I saw Wall E, one of the many things that passed through my mind, is that there was some heavy borrowing from Mike Judge’s Idiocracy. From the ever present corporate big brother, to the television screens and clothing being riddled with advertising, to the average person being an absolute dolt, not only the imagery, but even the story line seems too similar to be an accident. Some of this could be due to both movies borrowing from similar sources. Broadly that may be true, but some of the imagery is just too close to be coincidence. I have no idea if the staffs working on both of these movies (writers? producers?) had a bit of overlap or if Wall E flagrantly borrowed. I’ll leave that up to the movie buffs to decide.
Idiocracy is far from a perfect movie, but if you sometimes worry about the way that culture from news to the latest “reality” show seems to be sliding steadily, and continually to the lowest common denominator, you’ll likely enjoy some laughs from this one. This is a satire for adults though. Coming from Mike Judge you won’t be surprised that some of the humor is very crass though dead on. There were some parts that didn’t work for me, but several had me and my friends laughing out loud. I can’t believe this one never saw wide release. Wait. Yes I can.
